A sinus infection, also known as sinusitis, is an infection that occurs within the cavities of your nose – causing them to become swollen and inflamed. Often a sinus infection occurs as a secondary infection after a virus – long after your other cold or flu symptoms are gone.

There are a lot of symptoms associated with sinusitis, from congestion to pus to fever. But, no symptom is more debilitating than the pain that can occur with even a minor sinus infection. The pain you experience; however, will depend on whether or not you have acute or chronic sinusitis.

Acute Sinus Infection Pain

A sinus infection that lasts for a small period, such as from colds or allergies, is referred to as an acute sinus infection. While it may be temporary, there is still pain that you may experience.

The most common type of pain you will encounter with acute sinus infections is facial pain and pressure. As the sinuses become inflamed and swollen, they also become very tender. If you press on the sinus cavities, you could feel pain throughout the area. But also, you may have constant pain and pressure that remains whether you press on the area or not.

Chronic Sinus Infection Pain

Chronic sinus infections are those that last longer than eight weeks – long after the initial cause has corrected itself.

With chronic sinus infections, you are likely to experience the usual facial pain and pressure, but you may also suffer from additional pain. Headaches, for example, are common with chronic sinus infections and you could suffer from severe headaches as the pressure and congestion continue. Some patients have reported dental pain as well during chronic sinus infections. In some cases you may also suffer from pain in the ears, whether it is referred pain or due to a secondary ear infection.
