What are Sinuses? What are sinuses? Your sinuses are a series of hollow cavities in the skull. Surrounding the eye sockets, the purpose of the sinuses is to act as passageways. Each of your sinuses has a narrow channel that leads to the nose.

There are four types of sinuses, each set in pairs. They are called:

  • Frontal, located directly above the eyebrows
  • Ethmoid, located on the bridge of the nose
  • Maxillary, located in the upper cheeks
  • Sphenoid, located behind the nose

The air in the sinuses serves multiple purposes. It lightens the weight of the skull and makes your voice sound much more pleasant.
Sometimes, however, your sinuses can cause problems. Endoscopic sinus surgery is designed to alleviate a number of problems.

Swollen channels

Endoscopic Sinus SurgeryThe channels that lead from the sinuses to the nose are designed to allow air and mucus to escape the skull. Without these channels, the sinuses could fill with mucus or become pressurized to the point that they would cause serious damage to the skull.

Occasionally, these channels become swollen. Swollen channels will not allow air or mucus to pass. Endoscopic sinus surgery increases airflow from the sinuses to the nose.

Sinusitis

Similar to swollen channels, sinusitis also results from swelling. In this case, however, the swelling occurs in the lining of the sinuses. Sinusitis impacts individuals by preventing mucus from draining. Not only can this be painful, it can also impair breathing.

Common symptoms of sinusitis include:Sinus Anatomy - Sinus Infection & Treatment 12

  • Stuffy nose
  • Runny nose
  • Ear discomfort
  • Brightly colored discharge from nose
  • Frequent coughing and/or sneezing
  • Pain or discomfort in nose
  • Postnasal drip
  • Limited sense of smell and/or taste
  • Pain located centrally in your face

Usually, sinusitis only lasts for a brief time. A simple sinusitis treatment can relieve the discomfort and fix the problem. If treatments don’t work or your case is particularly problematic, a more permanent solution might be required. Endoscopic sinus surgery usually does the trick.

Nasal Polyps

Nasal PolypsNasal Polyps are noncancerous growths that can develop in the sinuses and cause blockage. Filled with water, polyps—also referred to as cysts—can swell to be the size of a grape. Obviously, something that large inside your sinuses will cause blockages. They can occur in anyone, but most often they appear in those with asthma.

Medication can be used to treat polyps. If medication doesn’t work for you, endoscopic sinus surgery is a fantastic and established way to remove the polyps. Once they are gone, you should be able to breathe normally once again.

Deviated septum

Sinus BlockageSeparating the nostrils is a partition of flesh called the septum. Rarely is a person’s septum entirely straight. In some people, however, that division is very crooked. This can result from an injury or it can be a birth defect.

For anyone with a significantly deviated septum, the abnormality can cause serious sinus blockage. An endoscopic sinus surgery can restore breathing by straightening out the septum.

Balloon Sinuplasty: Simplifying Surgery

Ballon-SinuplastyBalloon Sinuplasty is a relatively new technique that has been proven to be effective for those suffering from chronic sinus problems. Less invasive than other forms of sinus surgery, as there is no removal of bone or tissue from the nose, ENT doctors open swollen and irritated sinuses in the same manner that heart surgeons relieve blockages in arteries during balloon angioplasty.
